Three practical checks
Do not memorise
the label alone.
The same verb may behave differently when its meaning changes. Read the whole sentence and ask what the speaker intends.
- Is it an activity or change?Continuous forms are often possible: She is writing. Confidence is growing.
- Is it a condition, possession, opinion, or sense?A simple form is often more natural: I know. It belongs to me.
- Has the meaning changed?Compare: I think it is good. / I am thinking about it.
